On this summer's day, there is a very special atmosphere around the Neckar: boats glide across the water, filled with cheerful students and visitors, laughter and music are in the air.

My route starts at the Neckar parking garage, which is ideally located for a city tour through the old town if you are traveling by car. From there it goes straight to the Eberhardsbrücke bridge. The colorful flower boxes on the railing immediately catch your eye, while a punt with an Asian tour group passes by on the river below. Apparently it's a choir spontaneously singing a song, which is greeted by the bridge visitors and guests of the Neckarmüller brewery's is rewarded with hearty applause.

Alongside Heidelberg and Freiburg im Breisgau, Tübingen is one of the best-known university cities in Baden-Württemberg. The old town is already largely car-free. Out-of-towners have no chance of finding a parking space in the streets of the city center – these are reserved for residents.

Literary Traces: Hesse Cabinet and Cottahaus

Through Lange Gasse I walk to Holzmarkt, Tübingen's busiest square.
