Zavelstein Crocus Bloom: Purple Fields in the Black Forest, Germany

Mar 8, 2026 | 0 comments

In early March, the meadows around the small Black Forest town of Zavelstein, a district of Bad Teinach, turn into a sea of purple flowers. Thousands of wild crocuses cover the meadows around the historic old town and attract many visitors to the Northern Black Forest every year in March. I visited on a sunny spring day and combined the crocus bloom with a short walk through Zavelstein – including the castle ruins, half-timbered houses, and a cozy coffee break. If you like, you can easily combine this excursion with a wellness weekend in the Teinach Valley.

Walking Route to the Crocus Bloom – My Walk Through Zavelstein

During the crocus bloom, the parking lots around Zavelstein fill up quickly. If you arrive on a weekday before noon, you should have no problem finding a parking space. Try to avoid weekends if possible. Many locals like to visit the crocus bloom in March – on Saturdays and Sundays it becomes extremely crowded. I usually park at the forest parking lot opposite the Wanderheim Zavelstein. From here you are right next to the crocus meadows and can stop at the beautiful beer garden at the beginning or end of your walk

The walk itself is about 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) long and can be completed quickly. However, there are many beautiful photo opportunities in the crocus meadows and in the historic town, so you should allow at least two hours – longer if you plan to stop for coffee. If you enjoy hiking, you will also find excellent trails around Zavelstein. One example is the Water, Forest and Meadow Trail (Wasser-, Wald- und Wiesenpfad), a 14.1 km (8.8-mile) premium hiking trail that leads through the picturesque Rötelbach Valley to the half-timbered town of Calw, the birthplace of Nobel Prize-winning author Hermann Hesse. In that case, you should plan a full day.

Starting at the Forest Parking Lot – First View of the Crocus Meadows

The forest parking lot opposite the Wanderheim Zavelstein is ideal. From here you can immediately access one of the popular hiking trails. At the Wanderheim beer garden you can enjoy a meal or a drink before or after your walk – and restrooms are available as well. During crocus season, you are also right next to the main attraction: the surrounding meadows glow with thousands of purple flowers.

The Crocus Bloom in Zavelstein – A Purple Sea of Spring Flowers

Every March, thousands of purple crocuses spread across the meadows around Zavelstein’s small historic town center. This natural spectacle attracts visitors from across Germany and beyond each spring.

Crocuses are actually native to the Mediterranean region. Several legends surround the question of how the Zavelstein crocuses first arrived here. The most likely explanation is that Benjamin Buwinghausen von Wallmerode, lord of the castle, brought some crocus bulbs back from a trip abroad around 1620 for his castle gardens. Traditional farming around Zavelstein likely helped the plants spread over time through livestock fodder and manure.

When Do the Crocuses Bloom in Zavelstein?

The crocus bloom in Bad Teinach-Zavelstein is one of the best-known spring events in the northern Black Forest and even the whole of Germany. It usually begins at the beginning of March and reaches its peak in mid-March. However, depending on the weather, the timing can be delayed by one to two weeks. The blossom is particularly beautiful on sunny days when the purple flowers fully open.

💡 💡Tip: The exact time of crocus flowering can vary slightly each year. You can find up-to-date information on the flowering stage on the Teinachtal tourism website.

Where are the Crocus Fields in Zavelstein?

Most of the crocus meadows are located on the slopes around the small town of Zavelstein. The largest fields are located along Fronwaldstraße, Spinnerin-Kreuz-Weg, Stauferstraße, Krokusstraße and Speßhardter Straße and can be easily reached on foot from the old town.

Extra Tip: When you reach Fronwaldstraße again at the end of your walk via Spinnerin-Kreuz-Weg, cross the street and walk a short distance into the forest (following the Water, Forest and Meadow Trail markings). After just a few steps you will reach a beautiful crocus meadow on a forest clearing, framed by tall Black Forest fir trees.

Half-Timbered Houses in the “Städtle” – Walking Through the Historic Town

If you enter Zavelstein via Krokusstraße, you will pass the Altes Waaghäusle and soon reach the market square. Along the way you will also see several historic fountains. Cross Teinacher Straße at the pedestrian crossing and you will arrive directly in the old town, which consists of just one street – appropriately named “Im Städtle.”

Here you will find several beautiful half-timbered houses, including the Alte Schmiede (Old Forge). The local heritage group of the Black Forest Association has recreated a historic blacksmith workshop here. It can be visited free of charge (donations are appreciated).

Also very picturesque are the Old Defense Tower (Alter Wehrturm) and St. George's Church. The local history museum is located in the former school and town hall building. Among other things, it displays historic toys as well as exhibits on crafts, everyday life, religion, and the importance of the forest for the region. The museum is usually open on Sundays and public holidays in the afternoon.

Zavelstein Castle Ruins – Views over the Northern Black Forest

Above the half-timbered houses of the small town rises Zavelstein Castle – during your walk you will approach the ruins directly.

The castle was probably built around 1200 as a hilltop Staufer castle above the Teinach Valley. It was first mentioned in documents in 1303. It soon became part of the possessions of the Counts of Württemberg, who administered their territories in the northern Black Forest from here.

A well-known episode in the castle’s history occurred in 1367, when Count Eberhard II of Württemberg (“the Quarrelsome”) sought refuge here after narrowly escaping an attack in nearby Wildbad.

In the early 17th century, Benjamin Buwinghausen from Wallmerode had the medieval castle converted into a Renaissance palace. During the Nine Years’ War French troops destroyed large parts of the complex in 1692. Since then, Zavelstein has remained a ruin – and at the same time one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Northern Black Forest.

The bergfried (main tower) was the most important defensive tower of the castle in the Middle Ages. It served both as a final refuge during attacks and as a lookout tower from which the surrounding land could be monitored. Today you can climb the tower and enjoy views over the Teinach Valley and the Northern Black Forest .

Where to Eat in Zavelstein – Cafés and Restaurants in Town

The small town of Zavelstein even has a Michelin-starred restaurant: the restaurant Berlins Krone. Chef Franz Berlin combines regional tradition with international influences in his cuisine. The Berlin family also runs the Wanderheim Zavelstein - There, too, you can expect good food and a relaxed atmosphere in a beautiful natural setting.

There are also two very charming cafés in Zavelstein. I have already visited Café Zavel twice – the delicious cakes quickly made me come back for more. The small café is located directly on the market square and has a terrace facing the street. Inside, it is cozy and welcoming, and the selection of homemade cakes is surprisingly large for such a small café.

In the historic street “Im Städtle,” anna’s Café im Alten Haus catches the eye. The lovingly restored half-timbered house with its cozy terrace is an eye-catcher even from the outside. Anna and her team serve cakes and tarts as well as homemade ice cream and delicious sourdough toast. A special highlight is the gourmet breakfast on Fridays and Saturdays, which is only available by reservation.

Wellness Weekend in the Northern Black Forest – Staying in Bad Teinach

If you don’t want to experience the crocus bloom only as a short excursion, you can easily combine your visit with a wellness weekend in the Teinach Valley. There are several beautiful wellness hotels in Bad Teinach. One of the best known is the Wellness Hotel Kronelamm directly in Zavelstein, which is famous for its excellent cuisine and its large spa area.

Another beautiful option is the Hotel Therme Bad Teinach, located only a few minutes from Zavelstein. The hotel is directly connected to the Bad Teinach Mineral Spa, allowing you to relax in warm thermal water after your walk through the crocus meadows. This combination is especially appealing in spring: first a walk through the blooming crocus meadows around Zavelstein – and afterwards a relaxing afternoon at the spa.

Conclusion: Crocus Bloom in Zavelstein – A Special Spring Excursion in the Northern Black Forest

The crocus bloom in Zavelstein is one of the most beautiful spring events in the Northern Black Forest. What makes it especially appealing is the combination of purple crocus meadows, the charming half-timbered town, and the castle ruins with their sweeping views over the Teinach Valley. For a short trip in March, a visit is definitely worthwhile – ideally on a weekday or later in the afternoon, when it becomes quieter again and the softer light makes the crocuses glow even more intensely.
